Mahler - Symphonie n°9
If the farewell is undeniably, as Henry Louis de La Grange notes, the main subject of the Ninth, it cannot, however, be that of a man bowing out of life and into death. Mahler’s farewell is quite different. It is the renunciation of fighting the harshness of the human condition that he expresses here. A detachment that leads his soul and body, damaged but now inclined to heal, to reconcile. This gives us a glimpse of a peace that his music, until now so telluric, fiery and tortured, suggested as impossible. Transmitted into silence by this cathartic exercise, the musical material gradually branches out and fades away, distilling impressions in ever more fragile fragments. And the score ends on a single harmony, synthesised in a single breath. A breath that could at once be that of the God to whom Mahler is addressing himself, that of the composer at last at rest, as well as that of the listener, transfixed by the emotion born of this listening.
