Opéra in four acts Music Giuseppe Verdi Libretto Francesco Maria Piave Based on Hernani, Victor Hugo
Elvira is surrounded by the trio of men who desire her: the man she loves, Don Juan d'Aragon, now the bandit Ernani, her libidinous old uncle Silva, who wants to marry her, and the King of Spain, Carlos. In an attempt to win her, the three men clash, forge improbable alliances and make absurd pacts that lead to the fatal outcome - the suicide of the two lovers. The advantage of this unlikely trio is that it perfectly typifies the three Verdian tessituras: Ernani, the valiant tenor with his bravura cabalettes, Carlos with the carnal velvet of the Verdian baritone and the noble bass demanded by the role of Silva. This opera is the maestro's 5th. It marks a threefold break for the composer, firstly in terms of location, since his first four compositions were performed at La Scala in Milan, with Ernani, he began a collaboration with La Fenice. Then there was a break with the subject: Verdi wanted a grand libretto. He insisted: "There must be a lot of fire, a lot of action and it must be concise". Finally, he introduced a working method that was to be his signature for the rest of his life, a totally autocratic approach to the performance of his works. He wanted to have his hands on everything, and this earned him a serious and well-deserved reputation as a quasi-dictator.
