Opera in 3 acts by Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski and Constantin CHILOVSKI after Alexandre Pouchkine
The plot takes place on a country estate near Saint Petersburg at the end of the 18th century. Olga and Tatiana are the daughters of Madame Larina: the former is cheerful and in love with the poet Lensky, while the latter is dreamy and melancholic. When Eugene Onegin, a friend of Lensky's, arrives, Tatiana instantly falls in love with this cold man—who responds to her passion with contempt. Seemingly devoid of all feeling, Onegin goes so far as to cynically court Olga at a ball: this only increases Tatiana's pain and provokes a terrible fit of jealousy in Lensky, who challenges his friend Onegin to a duel; but it is Lensky who perishes in the duel. Many years pass. Eugene Onegin has realized too late the love he felt for Tatiana, now married to Prince Gremin. When Onegin confesses his passion to Tatiana and his regret at not having responded to her love in the past, she rejects him despite her continued passion for him and turns him away, faithful to her duty as a wife. Onegin remains alone, unhappy and cursing the heavens.
