Prima la musica Opéra en un acte (divertimento teatra) by Antonio Salieri and Der Schauspieldirektor Opera in one Act by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Emperor Joseph II loved musical competitions. In 1786, he decided to treat his court to a double bill featuring the most popular forms of music in Vienna at the time: Italian opera and German Singspiel. He commissioned two one-act comic operas simultaneously from two of the greatest composers of the era: Salieri and Mozart. Mozart's short work, Der Schauspieldirektor (The Theater Director), has only five numbers, but the brilliant overture and the vocal and contrapuntal virtuosity of the ensemble are enough to reveal the mark of a lyrical genius in the making. No less successful, Salieri's Prima la musica e poi le parole (First the Music, Then the Words) offers a caricature of Lorenzo Da Ponte as a mad librettist.
