Madama Butterfly was the perfect opportunity to exploit the ‘Japonism’ that had been in vogue in the West since the end of the 19th century. In search of new colours and unique atmospheres, the musician studied the language, culture and music of Japan, not hesitating to use some authentic melodies. The result is overwhelming. The composer claimed that it was his ‘most sincere and expressive’ opera. A sublime portrait of a fragile woman-child filled with purity and idealism, the Lucca master's masterpiece has lost none of its power and offers us a moment of great human and musical emotion.

Cio-Cio-San, betrayed and abandoned, has only one option left...
