The scenario of Gounod's Faust is comparable to Goethe's, but without the philosophical and scientific depth of the literary model. Gounod's Faust was written in the carefree years of Paris before the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Faust does not seek to understand the world. When the Devil asks him what he is looking for, he simply mentions the pleasures of love. For Gounod, the tragedy of Marguerite was the articulation of the drama and he placed it at the centre of his work.
Faust has spent a lifetime in the study of philosophy. Disillusioned, he resolves to poison himself. A visit from his students after a night on the town, painfully reminds him of his lost youth. He curses God and calls for the devil.
